In a sense, work on the digital reunification of the MewarRamayana began in the 1970s when Jeremiah Losty, then the curator for Sanskrit collections at the British Library, while “hunting through the selects”, came across enormous bound volumes of the epic, commissioned by Rana Jagat Singh of Mewar in 1649. “Back then, it was totally unknown. They were never published in a book, apart from one miniature in the 1950s,” says Losty, now an Asian and African Studies emeritus, with the library.
